The Sucker Punch Heard (And Seen) Around The World
The Sucker Punch Heard (And Seen) Around The World
Preface: The following is not a topic I would normally write about. It’s so offensive to me as a Christ follower I feel I had to say something. Not that God needs me to fight His battles. But I doubt anyone else will cover the event from this perspective. Here goes…
I don’t believe I’ve ever watched the Oscars. It’s not my idea of fun seeing pompous overpaid millionaires trying to out glitz each other with bedazzled clothes and jewelry worth more than I could make working a lifetime.
I wouldn’t have even known there was violence at the Oscars if my news feed hadn’t made me aware of it. Violence? Yes, violence. In case you hadn’t heard, Will Smith sucker punched, hit, slapped, whatever, Chris Rock who had made a “joke” about Will’s wife’s shaved head.
It was a “joke” in poor taste since Jada Smith has alopecia. It’s kind of like making fun of a cancer patient who has lost their hair because of chemo. It’s just not funny. Though Jada Smith herself has publicly laughed and joked about it.
At first Mr. Smith laughed about what Chris Rock had said. But moments later he got up from his chair and sucker punched-slapped, hit, whatever Chris Rock while yelling at him (more than once) to, “Take my wife’s name out of your ******* mouth”.
Moments later Mr. Smith give an Oscar worthy performance as he tearfully accepted his Oscar for best actor. During his speech, he pontificated about how God has called him to love people and to protect people and to be a river to his people (whatever that means). He went on to say he wants to be a vessel for love, an ambassador of love and care and concern.
Then, in a true testament to how God has called him to love people (forget he just hit Chris Rock), Mr. Smith apologized to the academy and his fellow nominees, but not to Chris Rock, the man he hit. Mr. Smith, who wants to be a “vessel for love, an ambassador of love and care and concern” didn’t apologize for his violence towards someone who would be included in the group Mr. Smith calls, “his people”, the very ones he wants to be a river to. It’s rather like saying, “sorry not sorry” don’t you think? I certainly do! And it’s just one more sanctimonious example of how the elites view their superior selves.
I guess in my mind, this incident would be less glaringly hypocritical, this wanting to love and protect and care and be concerned for others if he also hadn’t just recently done a much too in depth interview talking about his marriage not being monogamous, Because nothing defines an ambassador of love and care and concern like having numerous and ongoing extramarital affairs — on your spouse — the person you should most be a vessel for love and care and concern.
That’s why the sucker punch, hit, slap, whatever is even more in your face and ridiculously hypocritical. It’s OK for Mr. Smith to have extramarital affairs — to even talk (boast) about it — to embarrass and shame his wife on national TV, but if someone else takes a jab at her about something Jada Smith has publicly laughed about herself — well, Mr. Smith will take a jab at them.
FYI Mr. Smith, loving and caring and being concerned about someone will never be defined as having extramarital affairs and publicly talking about or proudly proclaiming said sins while humiliating your wife — whether or not she also commits the same sin.
Your lifestyle and actions certainly don’t show a “calling” from God to be a vessel for love, an ambassador of love and care and concern. If God has truly called you to be these things you have and are failing miserably. If you’re even trying, except when you’re on camera, that is.
Finally, Mr. Sith, If you really want to be a vessel for God, you need to get off your high horse and get on your knees. Quit preaching to those of us who truly (and daily) seek to follow God and do us all a huge favor: “Take God’s name out of your mouth”!
